Protecting Love: Why Adding New Jewelry to Your Insurance Policy is Essential

Valentine's Day is a time for love, celebration, and thoughtful gestures. You may have even been fortunate enough to receive a beautiful piece of jewelry! However, it is important to remember that along with the joy of your new treasure comes the responsibility of safeguarding it properly.

You may believe your new jewelry is automatically covered for the full limit but most Insurance policies often come with sublimits, which are predefined maximum coverage amounts for specific categories of items, such as jewelry or firearms. The way to avoid having an issue with sublimits is to properly schedule the item to your policy.

The Importance of Scheduling:

  • Many insurance policies have sublimits for jewelry that may not fully cover the value of high-end pieces. Scheduling your new jewelry allows you to specify the exact value of the item, ensuring that you receive adequate coverage.

  • Scheduling an item on your policy also provides broader coverage. It protects against a wide range of risks, including theft, damage, loss, or may even include mysterious disappearance – scenarios that may not be fully covered under a standard policy without scheduling.

Now that you know the benefits of scheduling, how do you go about adding it to your policy?

  • The first thing you will need is an appraisal. An appraisal provides an accurate assessment of the item's value, considering factors like gemstone quality, metal type, and overall craftsmanship.  Usually, the jeweler the item was purchased from can provide the appraisal document.

  • Next, send the appraisal to your Insurance Agent and ask to schedule the item to your policy.  The agent will send the document to the company and add it to your policy or depending on the value, suggest a separate policy specifically for this item.

  • It is also a good idea to keep a copy of the appraisal and any other photographs, receipts, and certificates of authenticity in the event of a claim.

Valentine's Day is a special occasion that brings cherished moments and meaningful gifts. Ensure that your new jewelry continues to bring joy for years to come by taking the necessary steps to protect it. Scheduling your jewelry on your insurance policy is a small yet significant gesture that provides peace of mind and ensures your precious belongings are safeguarded against unforeseen events.
